Webinar Title: The Executive’s Role in IT

Webinar Purpose:

Of the many “direct-reports” under a health care executive, the CIO or IT Director poses some of the greatest management challenges due to the critical role IT is taking in the delivery of patient care and the complex nature of technology. Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) and Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) have taken IT to the forefront of patient care, while the cost of Hospital Information Systems (HIS) have grown increasingly difficult to fund in light of dwindling reimbursement. Add challenges like outsourcing, Regional Health Information Organizations (RHIOs) and Personal Health Records (PHRs) on the Internet, the IT function poses challenges to even the most tech-savvy executive.

This seminar will address all of these issues, giving practical, real-world advice based on 15 years of experience from The Hunter Group (THG) in assessing the IT function at over 100 of the largest and most complex facilities in the country. The speaker has also consulted at over 50 small hospitals of under 100 beds and will stress the different approaches large versus small-sized facilities must take.

Webinar Objectives:

  • How do you manage board of director “experts” in IT (“This is how we do it at the bank…”)
  • How much should you invest in IT? Are there benchmarks for capital vs. operating expenses?
  • How to tell when your CIO is getting too cozy with your IT vendors “partners.”
  • What role should executives play in key IT projects such as strategic planning, system selections, contract negotiations and implementations?
  • How should you react when your CIO starts to spout unintelligible “computer-speak” and acronyms.

Target Audience:  CEOs, COOs, and CFOS – all hospital executives to whom the IT function reports.
